The primary goal of the 100% Immunization Campaign is to ensure that all older adults are immunized against influenza and pneumococcal disease, including residents of nursing facilities and assisted living environments.  This campaign is coordinated by the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists, and supported by a grant from Merck Vaccine Division.  Technical assistance is provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Health Care Financing Administration.  A steering committee, with representatives of the participating organizations, has had primary responsibility for planning and implementing the campaign.

The organizations participating in this campaign share an interest in promoting immunization practices in older adults and long-term care settings.   There is evidence to show that many residents of long-term care facilities have not been adequately immunized.  This campaign provides support of immunization initiatives through a variety of strategies, including the provision of immunization information, sample forms and procedures, and other resources to promote immunization practices.

The immunization resource manual is one of the key initiatives of the 100% Immunization Campaign.   It contains a variety of immunization reference information to educate health professionals, long-term care facility staff, and older adults about immunization issues.  In addition, this manual is designed to promote the development of consistent immunization practices in long-term care settings throughout the United States.

The first year of the 100% Immunization Campaign (1999) focused on improving immunization rates in nursing facilities and assisted living environments.  The launch of this web site is a key development in broadening the focus of the campaign.  Year two (2000) will focus on improving immunization rates in older adults generally, not just in long-term care environments.

The 100% Immunization Campaign has launched a program to recognize long-term care facilities that achieve success in immunizing residents. The Partner Program provides a wall certificate, sticker for the front door, listing on the 100% Immunization Campaign web site, and a press release to assisted living and nursing facilities that achieve immunization of 80% of residents with both pneumococcal and influenza vaccines. Click the Partner Program link above for more details and an application form.

Check this page periodically to see the progress and developments in implementing the 100% Immunization Campaign.
