Nursing facilities and assisted living communities now have the opportunity to enroll as a partner in the 100% Immunization Campaign. Long-term care organizations that meet the Healthy People 2000 goals for immunization of residents are eligible to join. These goals specify that 80% of the facility residents should be immunized for both pneumococcal and influenza vaccines. The influenza goal applies to the most recent influenza season.

As a partner in the Campaign, the organization will receive:

  • A certificate, suitable for framing, identifying them as a partner in the 100% Immunization Campaign for the 2000 – 2003 time period
  • A sticker with the Campaign logo, to place on the door of the main entrance
  • A press release to send to local news media (e.g. ABC Nursing Facility Joins 100% Immunization Campaign)
  • Listing as a Campaign partner on the 100% Immunization Campaign web site (www.immunizeseniors.org)

To qualify as a partner, the organization must:

  • Verify that the facility has met the Healthy People 2000 target level for immunization of residents of the facility
  • Verify that the facility has in place an immunization program for residents that addresses the three target vaccines: influenza, pneumoccal, and tetanus-diphtheria (note that no target levels are specified for tetanus-diphtheria, but the facility should have a policy and procedure that addresses this vaccine)
  • Provide payment of $25 to cover expenses associated with the program

Two signatures are required to verify that the organization has met the requirements to become a partner in the 100% Immunization Campaign. One of the signatures must be provided by either the Administrator or Director of Nursing. The second signature must be provided by either the Medical Director or Consultant Pharmacist.

The 100% Immunization Campaign has a variety of resource materials to assist long-term care organizations with meeting the immunization goals and implementing an organized immunization program in the facility. A revised Immunization Resource Manual will be available in July 2000. For more details, check the Campaign web site at: www.immunizeseniors.org.

The 100% Immunization Campaign is coordinated by the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists and funded by an unrestricted educational grant from Merck Vaccine Division. Twenty-one national organizations are participating in this initiative, including the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging (AAHSA), American Health Care Association (AHCA), Assisted Living Federation of America (ALFA), and the National Center on Assisted Living (NCAL).
